A little about me
Hi, my name is Adam, I live in Colac, and I’m a bird nut! Getting out on an adventure to see and photograph birds is my favourite thing to do. I just love going out into the bush, breathing in the fresh air and seeing all the amazing birds we are so lucky to have surrounding this area.

Begginings
As a kid, I was mesmerised by our aviary birds and their ability to fly back and forth across the cage. They seemingly levitate from one side to the other. A simple flap of wings and away they go. I remember waking to the spiritual sounds of Currawongs in the distance, and my Dad helping identify some local species around our home.

Some of my favourite birds
I like most, if not all, birds, and I don’t really have a favourite. I’ll name some of my top-liked birds to give you an idea, but I could seriously just list every bird. So here we go. I really like Black Falcon, Masked Owl, and Curlew Sandpiper. I also like Grey Goshawk, Plumed Egret and Freckled Duck, and I have a soft spot for Thornbills. I also have a strong interest in our local subspecies of Pied Currawong (ashbyi) and Grey Currawongs, and many, many more.

Published Field Guide
In 2019, good friend Ian Davies and I published local field guide, Colac Otway Birds. Aimed at novice and visitor bird enthusiasts and anyone interested in the birds of our area. Filled with coloured photos of 226 species, where you might find each one, a little about them and their rarity status in our area.

Networking
I’ve made many connections over the years, with some truly awesome people. Before the Internet, I learned mostly from books and field observations, mispronouncing bird names and getting excited about relatively common things. I thought birdwatching was something only a few people did. Now, with the help of social media, and being in contact with like-minded people, in related online groups, it’s a lot easier to see what other people are seeing, sharing what I see and interacting with other interested people.

Making friends
I found that birdwatching is actually very common, and many thousands of people all over the world are just as passionate as me. I’ve met a lot of awesome and friendly people, formed strong bonds, and made many friendships and memories along the way.

Keeping it close to home
These days, I do most of my birdwatching around the Colac Otway Region, the occasional twitch, usually nothing too drastic.

Shared experience
I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned with others and sharing in their experience and discoveries.
In saying that, I am pleased to announce that starting in 2025, I’ll be running Guided Bird Tours in the Colac Otway Region.
Aimed at beginner and travelling birders. Helping get you started with some locations and species identification or if you’re passing through and want to see as many birds as possible in a short amount of time.
